Empirical criteria for quality selection Both ends of good one are sharp and the central part is swollen. The one which is reddish-brown outside and white inside is called chestnut-like or potato-like. It is said to be excellent quality. (NI)

The origin of Tendaiuyaku is in China. According to a legend, Xufu brought it to Nanki (South part of Kii peninsula), Japan during the Qin dynasty. It grows wild in warm areas of Japan.
